Sculling Club will start on Friday 26th February. This first session will be for existing scullers only. New recruits will be welcome on 5th March. Sessions are held every Friday during term time, at Avon County Rowing Club in Saltford from 3.30pm to 5.15pm. There will be a capsize drill and swim test on Sunday 28th February. Please phone (0117 9867934) or preferably email me for more details or to book a place.

Wellsway School and Avon County Rowing Club are linked via Project Oarsome as part of the National Junior Rowing Programme. The project links up two schools with a local 'Go-row' accredited rowing club, provides equipment and has a structured progression of coaching. The other school involved with the club is Oldfield School, Bath.

The two schools have a special session each week after school on Friday afternoons (Spring half-term to Autumn half-term). New recruits are welcome to start during the first two weeks after Spring half term or the first two weeks of the Summer term. Watch the Ammonite for details. The club also has a general junior beginners session on Sunday mornings at 11.15am – this is available to all and runs all year around.

Everyone learns to 'scull' (paddle with two oars each) to start with and then may move to rowing (one oar each) as they get older. The club has lots of beginner sculling boats (called viruses, banana boats or lemons depending on who you ask!) which are great for splashing around, getting stuck in the bank or giving someone a free ride. Oh yes; and learning to scull in!

The club races all over the country (and abroad) all year around! Summer races are called regattas and winter races are called Head of the river races (or head races). Regatta’s are organised on the same basis as a tennis tournament – you race against someone and if you win you progress to the next round. Head races are timed processional long distance races and can be up to 4 miles long.

Some of the places the club has raced at recently are: Stratford–upon-Avon, Nottingham, London, Worcester, Swindon, Bristol, Llandaff (Wales) and Strathclyde (Scotland).

The club goes to all kinds of competitions from National level right down to events for beginners. Current club members have represented Great Britain at the World Junior Championships (in Athens, Greece) and the Coup de la Jeuness (European Championships in Portugal).
