Many thanks once again for all your support so
far this year, whether with practical work in the school garden, or
with the community work or the Cotswold wildlife park trip. I know
both Waycroft school and Cherry gardens school were delighted with
the work we did in helping them to improve their wildlife areas. I
thought it was very interesting to compare their gardens with ours;
all very different, but all attracting wildlife nevertheless. 130
frogs in Waycroft’s pond must be some kind of a record! Thanks also
to those who helped (at very short notice!) with last week’s visit
from Marksbury School's Green Team. They certainly enjoyed the pond
dipping!
I was very pleased with how well the pond edge
landscaping went, with help from the 6th form enrichment team as
well as many of you, but the long drought we had (while I was
stranded abroad!) has left much of our new turf looking very
parched; I have watered it liberally since then and the recent rain
has helped, but only time will tell whether it will recover. Fingers
crossed!
It is brilliant that our caretakers have at
last removed the piles of old desks, house huts, and other unsightly
rubbish that has been spoiling our garden for some time – even the
Keynsham in bloom judges commented on it! Now at last we can
concentrate on repairing and restoring the top lawn to its former
glory.
The summer programme has already started, with
the VERY early visit to the cycle track at Saltford to do our annual
bird survey last week. It was a nice morning, & well worth getting
up early – 16 people turned up and we saw and/or heard 34 bird
species, including a magnificent song thrush in full voice,
blackcaps, bullfinches and even partridges!
There are up to 3 excursions for you to opt
for this summer, including 2 trips which need minibus transport.
Manor Road pond is within walking distance of school, and it’s
another chance to see how much wildlife lives in the pond, and
compare it with our school pond. Make sure you see me if you need to
know where places are, and complete the permission slip(s) and pay
your money to book your place on the minibus.
Read through the programme carefully and note
the dates in your diaries.
Do keep coming to our meetings in school and
elsewhere. It's you that make the Green Team – not me!
Mr Sage
