We have just been awarded the
Eco-Schools Bronze Award for our work over the last 12 months.
Well done and many thanks to all Team members and staff
who have supported us in this worthy venture. We are now working
towards our silver award!
Most of the school was surveyed in January
2009. The audit confirmed informal observations that we are
wasting large amounts of energy by unnecessarily leaving electrical
equipment turned on.
In "good practice" areas, all lights were off,
windows closed, computers and projectors shut down. Green
thumbs-up to these! In the worst areas, large numbers of
lights and computers were left on. Generally, Mendip building
was worse than Lansdown building, particularly for leaving on
computers!
We will continue to monitor areas from time to
time and to put up posters and stickers as soon as they arrive from
the Carbon Trust.
On Thursday 26th March, the Eco-Schools Team
met with guest speaker Jane Talbot, from "Resources Future". She
talked about the increasingly important need to save energy in
schools. Jane was impressed with our audit and with the utilities
bills spreadsheet I recently received from the Business Manager,
which we can use a baseline to judge any future improvements and
savings in our energy use. She suggested some ways forward including
posters and stickers, more audits and a "PowerDown" day. She also
urged us to once again take part in the inspiring B&NES Climate
Change Conference in June, at Bath University. |
