For any student who wishes to participate in
our weekly debates or simply come and listen the Senior Debating
Society meets on Thursday lunchtime 12.35pm onwards in room 27 and
the Junior Debating Society meets on Friday at 2.45pm in room 17.
Mrs Cartwright
The motion being debated on Thursday 28th
January will be "This house believes that you should be a
legal adult at 15". All welcome.
Mr Backhouse
Both the Junior and Senior Debating teams
began the term well, taking part in the first inter-school's
debate of the academic year at the Royal High School. Pitting
their skills of oratory against Beechen Cliff, Oldfield Girls and
the Royal High School, the Juniors debated the issue of whether
travel broadens the mind and the Seniors considered whether
Britain should withdraw from Afghanistan.
Congratulations must go to Connor Jenkins,
Becky White and Lewis Nicholson-Pallett for their excellent start
to debating and to the Senior team of Jack Cooper and Jessica
Tilley for their very convincing arguments. Thanks also go to
Danielle Vrublevskis and Ross Taylor for their challenging
questions in the Floor debate.
Cambridge Union Schools Debate
On Monday 9th November, Isaac Palmer and Jack Cooper, both in
Year 13, represented Wellsway in the Cambridge Union schools
debating competition at Richard Huish College in Taunton. Both
spoke well in their prepared debate, "This house would ban the
consumption of meat" and they were generally felt to have won that
round. Their performance in the second, unprepared debate "This
house would raise the driving age to 21 for males" was equally
impressive, but they were unfortunately up against the hosts,
Richard Huish College and were beaten into an eventual second
place. This means, unfortunately, that they won't progress in the
competition, but they showed real improvement and should be
pleased with their result.
On Tuesday 24th November, Danni Vrublevskis
and Ellie Norris, both in Year 13, travelled to Chew Valley School
to compete in the ESU School's Mace competition, a national
debating contest. Despite presenting coherent and compelling
arguments, and speaking very well, they were unfortunately beaten
into second place by a very confident Chew Valley team.
Nonetheless, they defeated teams from Beechen Cliff and John of
Gaunt and should be very proud of their performances.
Mr Backhouse
| BATH MODEL UNITED
NATIONS |
The society recently took part in the
Bath International Schools'
Model United Nations (BISMUN) on 6th-8th March.
Wellsway entered 4 delegations into this the
19th BISMUN conference, and for the first time the school was
entrusted with a permanent member of the security council, France.
all the delegates involved thoroughly
enjoyed the conference and there was already excited speculation
about the next event at Eton College MUN in July.
