Introduction

What is Vertical Tutoring?

It is a system of school organisation based on communities or houses rather that year groups. Within each house students are placed in tutor groups with students from other years in the school.

How would it work at Wellsway?

We plan to have houses each led by a Head of House. Each house would consist of students from Years 7 to 13.
Each tutor group would have 4 or 5 students from each of the years 7 to 11 such that the whole tutor group will consist of between 20 to 25 students.
Sixth Form students would not be in the vertical tutor groups.
This would apply to the 25 minute tutorial period each day (10 minutes on a Friday). Lessons would continue to be taught in year group classes as now.
Assemblies would be House assemblies with Year Group assemblies when necessary.
Personal, Social, Health Education/Citizenship would continue to be taught in year group based classes

Why do we want to introduce Vertical Tutoring?

We believe that it will further improve our school and help to make us outstanding. Through our research, we have seen at first hand what a difference it can make and schools that we have visited have told us that it is the best thing that they have done. The benefits include:

A more cohesive school community
Support for younger students
Leadership opportunities for older students
Increased individual support and guidance
Stronger partnership with home
