Having won through to the second round of the
English Speaking Union (ESU) Mace, speakers Simon Clark and Daniel
Chen (both year 13) proposed the motion 'This house would put free
condom machines in all secondary schools regardless of their
religious status' against Queen Elizabeth's Hospital School,
Bristol. The debate took place in a lecture theatre at Oxford High
School on Monday 23rd February, and was attended by six schools
drawn from across the west.

The debate against QEH proceeded well, with
both speakers incorporating elegant arguments and well handled
rebuttal in their speeches. Following a unanimous decision by the
judges, which included two members of the ESU and a Catholic
priest, Wellsway were judged not only to be the winners of their
debate but indeed the entire round.
To reach the regional finals was further than
any team from Wellsway had managed previously, but it was here on
3rd March that they came upon the immovable object of
Cheltenham Ladies, last year's overall competition winners, and
were fairly beaten. That said, they can claim, fairly, to be the
best school debaters in at least five counties. Teacher, Mr
H.Backhouse commented they should be very proud.
